If there was any underdog in the 2008 edition of Formula One, it was the BMW Sauber F1 team. The much celebrated F1 team, is the erstwhile Sauber F1 team which was taken over by German automotive giant, BMW. Though the takeover happened in late 2005 and this team performed even during its first and second seasons in 2006 and 2007 respectively with 5 podium finishes together, it was only in 2008 that it recorded its first victory. The team made its mark in F1 when they got ace driver Jacques Villeneuve, who previously raced for Sauber, to race for them. The 2006 season also featured Nick Heidfeld as the second driver and Robert Kubica was named as the test driver. The Malaysian Grand Prix that season saw Villeneuve score the very first points for this team with a seventh place finish. With Heidfeld scoring the team’s first podium finish in the Hungarian Grand Prix, BMW Sauber created recognition for its white and blue colors. After the German Grand Prix where Villeneuve suffered an injury, Kubica was called in and alongwith his team mate Heidfeld, the duo managed to take the team points to 36 with Kubica scoring a second podium finish at the Italian Grand Prix. With his performance in 2006, Kubica had cemented his place in the team for the next season. In 2007, the Heidfeld-Kubica duo was to drive for the team again while Sebastian Vettel and Timo Glock were named as test drivers. Team principal, Mario Theissen, despite seeing potential in the car after seeing it topping the sheets in practice, knew there were still some technical snags to be resolved. In the premiere race in Melbourne, Kubica retired with gearbox complications but Theissen’s anticipation proved true when Heidfeld finished fourth that race. The good fortune continued that season with two more fourth places by Heidfeld and a sixth place by Kubica. The team was now slowly taking the competition to teams like Ferrari and Mclaren and Heifeld’s second position finish in the Canadian GP cleared the air.It is difficult to forget how the team performed in the 2008 season, with 11 podium finishes between Kubica and Heidfeld including the latter’s brilliant drive to victory in the Canadian Grand Prix. Heidfeld’s second place finish was only the cherry on the cake for this team. The 2009 season was however, one to forget. 36 points in the standings meant a 6th place in the championship which was a far cry from their 3rd place finish in 2008. To make matters worse, BMW announced its pullout from F1 after the season and had sold the team back to its founder, Peter Sauber. The new team came to be known as Sauber, which was given the 13th spot on the grid for the 2010 season.BMW Sauber's 4 seasons in F1 and the white-blue livery on their fast paced cars will definitely missed by one and all.
