In his position as chief operating officer, Szafnauer takes responsibility for the day to day management of factory and trackside operations and ensure the maximum productivity of all in-house departments. Additionally he ensures the McLaren and Mercedes partnerships are correctly implemented and developed in line with the team’s goals and long-term strategy.

Szafnauer has a wealth of Formula 1 and motorsport experience. After completing a degree in electrical engineering at the Wayne State university and a Masters degree in business and economics and the university of Detroit, he joined the Ford Motor Company in the USA in 1986. In 1993 his interest in racing led to his appointment as programmes manager of Ford Racing in the States.

In 1998 Szafnauer made the move to Europe to take up the position of operations director for the newly formed British American Racing team in F1. After a three-year stint he then moved to Jaguar and ultimately to Honda in 2002 where he held positions including vice president of Honda Racing Development. He joined Force India as chief operating officer in November 2009 and oversaw its most successful season to date.
