Heikki Kovalainen is eager and ready for a career that will pit him amid the frontrunners battling for a potential race win.
The Finn is currently with Caterham, formerly called Lotus, since 2010 driving a car that is incapable of even scoring a point although it has been consistently ahead of its immediate rivals Marussia and HRT.
But the 30-year-old is not content with being labelled as the frontrunner of the backmarkers.
“It’s not my ambition to be known for that sort of thing and I obviously want to be testing myself against the top drivers and the fastest cars, as does everyone in the team,” Kovalainen told the official Formula 1 website.
"I think I’m performing very well and hopefully I can get into a position with this team where I can fight with the top guys out there, rather than just my teammate!” he added.
The former Renault and McLaren driver has been rumoured to be linked with other teams for a seat next year, but Kovalainen denied any such claims.
"Hopefully we can keep going forwards and at some point this season we can start discussions (with Caterham) about what we’re going to do in the future,” he said. “We haven’t done that yet and I haven’t talked to any other teams yet.”
