Jenson Button is of the opinion that Fernando Alonso deserves this year’s title more than chief rival Sebastian Vettel, considering the way the Ferrari driver has performed under the circumstances this season.
Alonso has had to deal with a car that has not been able to match frontrunners Red Bull and McLaren this season but has eked out everything from his challenger to remain as a contender at the season-finale Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend.
"He's been there from the word go and he hasn't really made any mistakes this year and he's been consistently quick. He's done a very good job in the car he has,” Button was quoted saying by Autosport.
"Seb's been more inconsistent this year. The last few races he's been fantastic with a great car,” the McLaren driver pointed out.
"I think if you look at the season as a whole, consistency does mean a lot, and it's good to see that Fernando has been that good at every race. Very impressive to see that performance every race," he added saying that he didn’t expect Alonso to have a chance after the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
"He was a second off in qualifying, or even more,” Button recalled. "They've done a good job, and he's done a great job."
