Russian-owned Marussia evolved its 2013 race car using wind tunnel technology for the first time and has successfully incorporated a key power-boosting system, technical director Pat Symonds said on Tuesday.
The new Cosworth-powered MR02 was an evolution of last season's car but with the Kinetic Energy Recovery System, Symonds said at the car's unveiling in southern Spain.
Symonds said the aim this season was to finish ahead of rival Caterham.
Last season, Caterham finished in the lucrative tenth place while Marussia was unrewarded in 11th.
The former Renault technical chief said that even without the improvements, Marussia managed to beat Caterham on several occasions in 2012.
"We have KERS now," he said at the unveiling in Jerez, "so it's a realistic goal to stay ahead of them this year." Symonds said much work had also gone into improving stability.
"We embark," team principal John Booth said, "on the first preseason test of 2013 feeling very positive about our new car."
British rookie Max Chilton was the team's only confirmed driver so far.
