Although it is yet to be ascertained with authority whether Ferrari will be able to fight for the championship this season, it is however clear that the car is considerably better than its predecessor.

After the second day of the final pre-season test at Barcelona, Fernando Alonso acknowledged that his feeling in the new Ferrari has been a lot better than season.

"Probably the confidence that we have now is much more than we had last year at this time,” the Spaniard was quoted saying by Autosport.

"In the last test last year we more or less knew that we were around two seconds behind the leaders. We predicted we wouldn't be in Q3 in Australia, and it was true.

"This time is different. We are much more confident,” said the double world champion.

"The target was to reduce the gap we had in Brazil, which was seven or eight tenths, and I hope we have reduced that gap and that we arrive in Australia in a bit better shape than in Brazil, which means 200 times better than last year," he pointed out.

The Ferrari driver however refused to make any predictions about the pecking order based on his observations in testing.

"It’s normal and logical that one wants to make comparisons, but for me it’s like watching football training: you can’t believe that a reserve Real Madrid forward can be a contender against Barcelona just because he scores a goal in a kick-about,” he explained.
