Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso and his Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa made hay while the sun shone during Friday's first day of practice for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, ahead of unpredictable weather and track outcomes forecast for qualifying and race day Sunday.
Alonso and Massa lived up to expectation and emerged as serious challengers to the pacesetting Red Bulls, finishing sixth and eighth respectively after racking up 100 laps between them in the first two practice sessions of the season.
Alonso said Ferrari's efforts "were helped by particularly favourable weather with sunshine and summery temperatures," but warned that "the weather is expected to change completely from tomorrow, with wind, rain and a significant drop in temperature, which could influence Sunday's race."
