Felipe Massa not only continued his strong run from the end of last season but went even better during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday morning.

Convincingly beaten by his teammate since paired at Ferrari, the Brazilian out-qualified Fernando Alonso in the season-opener giving Massa a much needed boost early in the campaign.

"Starting from a good position is a positive and encouraging sign for the start of this championship," said Massa, who will line up fourth on the grid.

Alonso was just 0.003 seconds slower than Massa but confident that he could stage a better result than what the Italian team could manage in last year’s edition of the race in Melbourne.

“I think that starting from fifth, a podium finish is a realistic option," Alonso said.
