Despite setting a strong time in qualifying and clinching pole position, Sebastian Vettel struggled too much on his tyres at the Australian Grand Prix, in which he eventually settled for third place.
German publication, the Bild, reported that the team was left disillusioned after the race in Melbourne in a report amusingly titled ‘Hungry Heidi ate the tyres’.
"The tyre wear was enormous," Red Bull motorsport advisor told the Bild indicating that car had been too aggressive on the Pirellis. "This result was far from what we expected."
Vettel admitted that it was tricky to manage the tyres and had realised early on that he could be in trouble despite pulling away from the rest of the pack on the opening laps.
“I think we could see after a very good start, and a good first two or three laps, that the tyres were falling apart and we couldn’t go as long as other people,” said the German.
All this despite supermodel Heidi Klum, after whom Vettel had named his car, posted a picture on her Twitter page during the race, congratulating the driver for claiming pole position earlier in the day.
The photo was taken during lap 20, when Vettel was running second behind the Force India of Adrian Sutil.
