Kimi Raikkonen's day went from bad to worse after he could only qualify seventh and was later penalised three grid spots for impeding Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg during the final leg of qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
The sentence drops the Finn to tenth on the grid promoting Jenson Button, Adrian Sutil and Sergio Perez higher up the order.
The Lotus driver had won the preceding Australian GP from seventh on the grid but the penalty – the first issued this season - has now dented his chances of a repeat on Sunday.
"It’s obviously disappointing to lose three places on the grid, but we’ll have to see what happens in the race," said Raikkonen adding that he could have gone no quicker than his initial seventh place.
Last year at this race, Raikkonen was relegated five spots on the grid for making an unscheduled gearbox change.
