Mercedes could win the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix from pole position as the German manufacturer stands to gain a significant advantage on a track that doesn’t allow overtaking easily.
Lewis Hamilton and teammate Nico Rosberg have claimed the last three pole positions this season and could be the pick again to claim the top spot in Monte Carlo later this month.
“They will arrive as favourites for Monaco,” reckoned Fernando Alonso, who won the Spanish GP from fifth on the grid. “They’ve been on pole position for the last three races, they were on pole last year with Michael’s lap, so it would be a surprise if they weren’t on pole position in Monaco.”
Schumacher claimed pole at Monte Carlo last season but a five-place grid penalty from the preceding race had demoted him down the order.
“It’s more difficult to overtake in Monaco, so maybe they can keep good positions for longer,” added the Ferrari driver.
Rosberg had started last year’s Monaco GP from second place and finished in the same position at the end of the race. Schumacher was forced to retire with a fuel pressure issue.
Kimi Raikkonen too echoed the Alonso’s prediction.
“I think Mercedes will unfortunately be pretty quick there and after that it’s difficult to overtake,” said the Lotus driver. “They should be pretty fast there.”
