Fans attending the British Grand Prix applauded championship leader Sebastian Vettel’s retirement and cheered Red Bull teammate Mark Webber’s podium on Sunday.
Vettel, who had inherited the lead after Lewis Hamilton suffered with a tyre blow out, failed to finish the race with a gearbox problem on lap 41 allowing his title rivals to close the gap in the standings.
In contrast, Webber had dropped down the order in the opening stages clawed back to finish second and even challenged for the win, much to the delight of the crowds.
The Australian, who lives in England, had announced earlier this week that he would be quitting Formula 1 at the end of the season with the result providing a near-fitting tribute at a track where the 36-year-old has won twice since 2010.
