Mark Webber may be struggling to beat his teammate Sebastian Vettel in Formula 1 this season but the Australian driver was nearly a second quicker than the triple world champion’s time on Top Gear.
In his second appearance in the ‘Star In A Reasonably Priced Car’ segment on the British motoring television show, Webber set a time of 1 minute 43.1 seconds around the Top Gear Test Track located at Dunsfold Aerodrome in the Suzuki Liana.
Although he was slower than Lewis Hamilton’s top time by two-tenths, Webber was 0.9 seconds faster than Vettel, who had appeared on the popular show two years ago.
Earlier in the show, Webber was asked whether he would miss his teammate as he would be quitting F1 at the end of the season, and the answer wasn’t a surprise.
“Probably not a huge amount,” he said choosing his words carefully after a lengthy pause and a wry smile.
“I think in a competitive environment obviously there’s going to be a bit of a needle. There’s a lot of history between us too obviously that’s gone before,” he said referring to the several tiffs that had emerged between the two since they were teammates.
The latest row came at the Malaysian Grand Prix earlier this year when Vettel defied team orders and overtook Webber to win the race.
Presenter Jeremy Clarkson then asked whether he was ever tempted to punch the 26-year-old Vettel.
“My dad always says you shouldn’t hit boys, mate!” came the prompt reply from the 36-year-old Australian.
