If recent media reports suggesting that the Ferrari engines are on par with Mercedes this season are true, the championship could likely mimic the 2007 season when Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton sparred for the title added with Kimi Raikkonen in the mix.
Mercedes emerged as the most reliable car after the first pre-season test at Jerez last week with Ferrari a clear second. But now it has been reported that the Italian team has found an advantage in the fuel consumption department and also in cooling of the vast power units.
With Mercedes power dominating the opening test, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkobnen could now emerge as challengers to the Silver Arrows’ of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
The last time Alonso, Raikkonen and Hamilton battled at the front was in 2007 when the debuting Briton upset his Spanish double world champion teammate at McLaren while the Finn, in a Ferrari, picked up the pieces and claimed the title at the last race by one point.
It’s still too early to say how the season will unfold as Red Bull could just find solutions to the problems it has had so far. If that’s the case, then expect Sebastian Vettel to gatecrash the party as well.
